Crochet Face and Dishcloth Patterns

There are lots of practical uses for your crochet skills and these crochet dishcloths and flannels are perfect for beginners to make. They also make lovely gifts for friends and family or simple items to make and sell at craft fairs.

Crochet dishcloths are a great project for beginners and there are a myriad of free dischloth crochet patterns available for you to try.

The texture of the crochet stitches is ideal for cleaning without any possibility of scratching, unlike regular abrasive sponge scrubbers. Make a matching set for the kitchen - a dishcloth and pot scrubber or try crocheting pretty face scrubbies and flannels for the bathroom. It's very rewarding to make gifts that are not only beautiful to look at but have a practical use too.

We have an entire Pinterest board full of practical crochet patterns and we've chosen 5 of our favourites here.

What yarn should I use for making a crochet scrubber, face or dishcloth?

You can use cotton yarn or acrylic however, cotton yarns are more absorbent and there's no risk of them melting under high temperatures. Softer thicker cotton yarns are better suited to facecloths where you don't want them to feel too rough.

Are crochet dishcloths and facecloths hygienic?

Yes, as long as you wash them after use. All cloths and flannels breed germs if you leave them dirty and hanging around your sink - plus, we think you're far more likely to care for a cloth you have made yourself! Just add them to your next load of washing or you can soak them the same way you do with cloth nappies. They're so easy to make you can have a fresh one to use every day. You could put them on a hot wash occasionally, just as you might do with a flannel.

We recommend colour coding your crochet cloths, eg blue for the loo (easy for kids to remember!), green for the kitchen sink, pink for your face and yellow for kitchen surfaces - a rainbow of pretty crochet cloths!

White and pale cloths will look great to start with but may discolour and look dirty after repeated use.

When is a crochet dishcloth a crochet flannel?

They're really just exactly the same thing! You could use a softer baby yarn for face cloths, you don't want anything too rough, in fact they'd make a lovely new baby gift too!
