Free Pattern Alert: Gold Medal

Oh, hello Rio! We’re excited for the summer of sport to start, so we’ve whipped up this fun little project – perfect for sports days and little athletes in the making who are hosting their own special games!

Yarn used
Drops Paris
1 ball each in in Strong Yellow (A), oddments in Light Turquoise (B) and Apricot (C)

About the yarn
Aran; 100% cotton

Hook used

Other supplies
Toy eyes
Embroidery thread and sewing needle
2 cardboard circles 6.5cm in diameter
Tapestry needle

Finished medal is 7cm wide – medal ribbon is adjustable

Start crocheting

The medal is worked in an amigurumi style – in spirals, without joining each rnd with a sl st and without turning or a turning chain.

Rnd 1: With A, 6 dc into a magic ring.
Rnd 2: 2 dc in each st around. 12 dc
Rnd 3: [2 dc in next st, 1 dc] around. 18 dc
Rnd 4: [2 dc in next st, 2 dc] around. 24 dc
Rnd 5: [2 dc in next st, 3 dc] around. 30 dc
Rnd 6: [2 dc in next st, 4 dc] around. 36 dc
Rnd 7: [2 dc in next st, 5 dc] around. 42 dc
Rnd 8: Working into BLO, dc around.
Fasten off, leaving a 30cm tail for sewing up.

Practise eye placement, using image as a guide – then, before attaching them, insert one cardboard disk into wrong side of medal front.

Pierce the cardboard using a tapestry needle.

Insert eyes through hole and secure

Repeat again for second eye.

With you embroidery thread and sewing needle, embroider on a mouth using satin stitch.

Work a second medal side for the back by repeating Rnds 1 – 7. Do not join together yet.

With B, make a chain to the rough length you’d like your ribbon to be.

Row 1: Starting in 2nd ch from hook, dc across.
Fasten off B and join C in the first st made on Row 1.
Row 2: 1 ch, dc across. Fasten off C.

Making up

Using the long tail from medal side 1, start sewing the two pieces together starting at the bottom using an overstitch, ensuring the right side is facing out on both sides. When you get to just about above each eye, poke the ribbon end in, ensuring the right side is facing out and sew through. Continue along to space above second eye and insert in second end of ribbon, ensuring the ribbon is not twisted.

Continue sewing around until two thirds is complete, then insert the second cardboard disk at the back of the medal. Continue sewing to end, then weave in your ends.
